Case Summary

On January 19, 2001 the U.S. Department of Justice ("D.O.J.") filed a lawsuit under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 against the City of Bastrop in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana. The D.O.J., alleging that the defendant discriminated against a white employee on the basis of her race and sexually harassed her creating a hostile work environment, sought injunctive and monetary relief.

On October 1, 2001, the district court (Judge Robert G. James) accepted a consent decree, which provided that the defendant would pay the female employee $100,000 in damages and would enjoin their employees from engaging in actions that are racially discriminatory. The consent decree further provided that the defendant would implement a training program to educate all city employees about harassment. The decree was effective for five years.

The case is closed and we have no further information.
