On May 1, 2007, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) filed a lawsuit under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 against the City of Ville Platte in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana. The D.O.J., alleging that the defendant discriminated against a pregnant employee on the basis of her gender, sought injunctive and monetary relief.
The DOJ specifically alleged that although the female employee requested full-time employment, the defendant only offered her a part-time position due to her pregnancy.
On June 11, 2007, the district court (Judge Tucker L. Melancon) entered a consent decree, which stated that the defendant would create and make public a policy regarding discrimination on the basis of sex and pregnancy. The defendant also agreed to pay the employee damages.
This case is closed.
