Case Summary

On December 9, 2011, an openly gay former employee of Ohio Bell Telephone Company filed suit in U.S District Court for the Northern District of Ohio alleging that he had been dismissed in violation of both state and federal law. Specifically, Mr. Koren, who had taken the name of his husband, alleged that Ohio Bell violated the ADA, multiple sections of the Ohio Civil Rights Act, and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act when it dismissed him under the guise of missing days of work when in reality he was fired because his actions did not conform to the gender stereotype and he had AIDS.

On August 14, 2012, the court denied Defendants' motion for summary judgment. The case was dismissed after a settlement was reached on September 7, 2012.
