Case Summary

In April 2004, the Philadelphia District Office of the EEOC filed this suit against Michael's Salon Di Parrucchiere Inc. in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey alleging discrimination on the basis of sex in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Specifically, the defendant's owner subjected the charging party, a female employee, to a sexually hostile work environment consisting of sexually explicit comments, unwelcome touching, and unwelcome sexual advances. After a single scheduling order and a status conference, it appears that the parties decided to settle in March 2005, but they did not reach a final settlement until June 2005 when they entered into a consent decree.The three-year decree, containing non-discrimination and non-retaliation clauses, required the defendant to: post a Title VII notice, draft an anti-discrimination policy, implement a complaint procedure, distribute the anti-discrimination policy to all its employees, provide annual Title VII training for its supervisors and managerial personnel, and report to the EEOC at specified intervals. In addition, the defendant agreed to pay the charging party $17,500. The docket sheet doesn't show any further enforcement took place; the case was presumably closed in 2008.
