Case Summary

The EEOC's Phoenix district office sued Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., on December 23, 1996 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona; the case was apparently a sex discrimination case brought under Title VII. The defendant filed two motions for summary judgment on the issue of punitive damages, one in September 1998 and the other in March, 2000. The court denied the first and failed to rule on the second. The parties went to trial on May 8, 2000 and the jury ultimately ruled for the defendant on May 11, 2000.
