In June 1999, the Indianapolis Office of the EEOC brought this lawsuit against Thomson Consumer Electronics Inc. and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union #'s 1424 and 1048 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana. We do not have a copy of the complaint; therefore, the exact allegations involved are unknown. It appears from the consent decree that the EEOC alleged a violation of the Age Discrimination in Employment Act. The parties soon settled the lawsuit in August 1999 through a consent decree. This decree required the defendants to: pay $3,550,000 to compensate individuals who were given smaller severance packages than younger employees, create a settlement fund of $7,100,000, to post notice of Anti-Discrimination Policy, and to remove all discriminatory language from their collective bargaining agreement. Complainant Thelma Dalton was added to the settlement in August 2000 following a fairness hearing.
