Case Summary

In April 2003, the Denver District Office and Dallas, Saint Louis, and Washington, DC Offices of the EEOC brought this lawsuit against Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Society, also known as Omaha Woodmen Life Insurance Society, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Nebraska alleging discrimination on the basis of gender, female, and retaliation in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Specifically, the complaint alleged the defendants subjected the complaining party to a sexually hostile work environment and demoted her in retaliation for her opposition of this practice. The complainant intervened in the lawsuit in October 2003. Following a contentious discovery period, including a failed motion to dismiss by the defendant in August 2004, failed motion for summary judgment by the defendant in February 2007, and two interlocutory appeals to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eight Circuit, the parties settled the lawsuit in July 2007 through a settlement agreement. We do not have a copy of the decree; therefore, the exact remedies involved are unknown.
