Case Summary

In May 1999, the EEOC district office in New Orleans, Louisiana brought this suit against Specialized Industrial Maintenance in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Louisiana. The complaint states that a female alleged that the defendant unlawfully discriminated against her because of her sex when it refused to hire her for a welder position. After some cursory discovery, the parties settled and a consent decree was entered in April 2000.

In the consent decree, the parties agreed that the defendant would pay the aggrieved female $6,750, refrain from retaliating and discriminating on the basis of sex, provide EEO training, and submit semiannual reports to the EEOC outlining the number of women rejected for construction trade jobs and why. No fees or costs were awarded. The terms of the agreement ran for two years.
