On September 30, 1999, the Milwaukee and Minneapolis offices of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed a lawsuit under Title VII against the Emergency Physicians Professional Association in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota. We have no record of the complaint in this case, but we know from the consent decree that the EEOC alleged that the defendants had violated the rights of three female complainants by subjecting them to a sexually hostile work environment.
On April 12, 2000, the parties entered into a consent decree, which was adopted by the court on May 19, 2000. Under the terms of the decree, the defendants were prohibited from discriminating against any employee on the basis of their sex. They were required to post notice of the employment discrimination laws in their offices, and they agreed to pay $155,000 in wages and future pecuniary damages to the complainants. The defendants agreed to have all supervisors, managers, and human resources personnel undergo equal employment opportunity training in the year 2000. Finally, under the decree, on December 1, 2000, and May 1, 2001, the defendants were required to provide to the EEOC a report detailing all reports of sexual harassment, including the date of the complaint and how the issues were resolved.
