The Seattle District Office of the EEOC brought this action in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington, against Preferred Technical Services. The complaint, filed in September 1999, alleged sex discrimination in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Specifically, the complaint alleged that Defendant had subjected the charging party to a hostile work environment, sexual harassment and retaliation.
Prior to discovery, in July 2000, the parties agreed to a consent decree. The decree, which was valid for two years, included non-discrimination and non-retaliation provisions as well as required Defendant to adopt a written policy against sexual harassment, maintain an internal grievance procedure for applicants and employees who feel they have been discriminated against, expunge all records in the charging party's files concerning claims of discrimination, regularly report to the EEOC about any internal discrimination claim, and post a non-discrimination notice in a centrally located area.
