Case Summary

In June 2001, the Charlotte (along with Raleigh) office of the EEOC brought this Title VII suit against Environmental Air Systems, Inc. in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina. The complaint alleged that the defendant failed to hire the charging party to a Pipe Helper position because of her sex. The charging party intervened in the suit in July 2001, and the case settled by entry of a consent decree in September 2001.

The three year consent decree included an anti-discrimination provision, an anti-retaliation provision, payment of $44,000 to the charging party ($34,333.33 to charging party and $9,666.67 as attorney fees), management training, posting of an EE notice, advertisements of jobs containing statements that the defendant is an equal opportunity employer, active recruitment of women for Pipe Helper position, and semi-annual reporting to the EEOC of the identity of applicants for the Pipe Helper position.
