Case Summary
In March 2000, the Birmingham District Office of the EEOC brought this suit against Searcy and Sara Battle, d/b/a Battle's Travel Stop and Sara's CafÈ, in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Alabama. We do not have a copy of the complaint. However, according to the consent decree, the complaint alleged that the defendant terminated the charging party, a female employee, because she was pregnant in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. After some scheduling orders, the parties settled through a consent decree in April 2001. The decree contained a non-discrimination clause and had a three month duration. The defendant also agreed to pay the charging party $5,000 and to provide her with a neutral employment reference.
