In November 1998, the New Orleans District Office of the EEOC brought this suit against Louisiana Guest House in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Louisiana alleging discrimination on the basis of religion in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Specifically, the defendant failed to accommodate the charging party's religious beliefs by refusing to allow him to attend regular weekly Islamic prayer service unless his work was completed and by terminating him when the prayer service conflicted with a work assignment. The charging party intervened in the suit in January 1999. Thereafter, the EEOC and the defendant settled through a settlement agreement in February 1999, voluntarily dismissing their claims. The charging party and the defendant settled their remaining claims in June 1999.

The settlement agreement between the EEOC and the defendant required the defendant to: continue to post EEO and anti-discrimination notices, provide Title VII training for its administrators and managers, and pay the charging party $12,000.
