The Washington, DC and Birmingham offices of the EEOC brought this suit against Albany International Corp., Appleton Wire Division in the U.S. District Court for the Alabama Middle District. While we do not have a copy of the complaint, from the consent decree, we know the complaint alleged discrimination in violation of Title VII. More specifically, the complaint alleged the defendant created a hostile work environment based on race. A private plaintiff filed a motion to intervene and a motion to consolidate this case with a separate case brought by the plaintiff, both of which were granted in March 2000. This case was consolidated with 99-cv-00657. The defendant and the private party plaintiff both filed motions for summary judgment that were denied. The parties entered into a consent decree in August 2000.
The consent decree required the defendant to post notice of employment rights and provide EEO training to all employees. In the event of non-compliance, the decree called for court enforcement. The defendant also agreed to pay the complainant $33,000.
