Case Summary

The Memphis District Office of the EEOC filed this case in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee. The defendant was J. Alexander's Restaurants, Inc., a restaurant chain. It was alleged that the defendant discriminated against three male complainants on the basis of sex by refusing to promote them in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The case was filed in September 2004 and was resolved by consent decree in November 2005. During the litigation the defendant filed for summary judgment, which was granted in part and denied in part. The allegations involved two of defendant's restaurants and the allegations against one location were dismissed by this order. The complainants, who intervened in the case, were awarded $5,000 each and their attorneys received a total of $11,763. In addition, the company had to post a notice of rights and train its managers about gender discrimination laws.
