Case Summary

In August 2002, the San Antonio District Office of the EEOC brought this suit against defendant Harlingen Family Dentistry, P.C. in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas. The complaint alleged that defendant employer subjected the three charging parties to adverse employment actions including discharge because the parties objected to or refused to attend mandatory courses on Scientology. The EEOC alleged religious discrimination in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The case was settled in October 2003 by the entry of a consent decree.

The consent decree required the defendant to pay $42,500 to two charging parties, have all managerial and supervisory employees attend an EEO training session, refrain from discriminating or retaliating, and create or modify and implement a written anti-discrimination policy.
