This is a case about racial discrimination in employment conditions at the Maryland Department of State Police. The corresponding DOJ investigation, filed three months prior, can be found here. The plaintiffs, three officers of color employed by the defendant, Maryland Department of State Police, filed this class action in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland on October 24, 2022, on behalf of themselves and similarly situated officers. In their complaint, they alleged that the defendants engaged in discriminatory employment practices in violation of the Fourteenth Amendment and Title VII as well as a state law analogue by over-disciplining and under-promoting officers of color. Additionally, the plaintiffs asserted that their attempts to raise complaints about their experiences resulted in retaliation in violation of the First Amendment. As such, the plaintiffs sought compensatory damages, injunctive and declaratory relief, and attorneys’ fees. Judge Deborah L. Boardman was assigned to the case.

This case is ongoing.
