In September 2000, the EEOC district office in Chicago, Illinois brought this suit against Spacelabs Burdick, Inc. in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. The complaint states that a former female employee alleged that the defendant unlawfully discriminated against her on the basis of her sex in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Specifically, she alleged that the defendant paid her a lower commission rate than men, forced her to track her own accounts to figure out sales, was not allowed to go on a retreat that she qualified for, and terminated her employment because of her sex. Six days after the complaint was filed, the court entered a consent decree.

In the consent decree, the parties agreed that the defendant would pay the female $170,000, refrain from retaliating and discriminating on the basis of sex, implement an anti-discrimination policy, post a notice of this suit and consent decree, and submit semiannual compliance reports. No fees or costs were awarded. The terms of the agreement ran for one year.
