In October 2000, the EEOC district office in New York, New York brought this suit against CBS Broadcasting, Inc., a national television broadcasting firm, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. Although the complaint is not available, the EEOC annual report states that the suit was brought on behalf of a class of over 200 female technicians nationwide. The EEOC alleged the the defendant violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 when it unlawfully discriminated against women by maintaining a hostile working environment, paying women less than men, not promoting or training women, and retaliating against those who complained.
A consent decree was entered two days after the suit was filed. The defendant agreed to pay the class $8 million, adopt, post and distribute a new non-discrimination policy, train employees in anti-discrimination and anti-harassment law, adopt procedures for posting of vacant positions and opportunities for overtime and special assignments, and meet a number of other requirements.
