Case Summary

In September 2003 the Charlotte and Washington, D.C. offices of the EEOC brought this suit against U.S. Pipeline, Inc. and Laborers Local Union 980 of Laborers International Union of North America in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina. The EEOC alleged on behalf of eleven Hispanic individuals that the defendants failed to hire them for jobs on a gas pipeline because of their national origin. A consent decree was filed later that same month. In the two-year consent decree, the defendants were required to institute an anti-discrimination policy and provide annual EEO training for its managerial employees. The EEOC was allowed to inspect any of the defendants' premises to review its compliance with the decree, and the defendants were required to submit semi-annual reports to the EEOC. Additionally, each of the eleven complainants was awarded $7,850.00.
