Case Summary

In September 2004, the Dallas District Office of the EEOC brought this suit against Stocks, Inc., d/b/a CafÈ Italia, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas alleging violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Specifically, the defendant subjected the charging party, a female employee, to a sexually hostile work environment by making sexually explicit comments to her and offensively touching her. In addition, the defendant retaliated against the charging party by reducing her hours and later terminating her.

After an unsuccessful settlement conference in August 2005, a jury trial was held in April 2006 with the jury rendering a verdict against the defendant who was required to pay $10,000 to the charging party. After several unsuccessful post-judgment motions, the case was appealed in August 2006, and the appeal was dismissed in January 2007.
