Case Summary

In March 2001, the EEOC's Milwaukee office filed this suit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota against Norstar Bagel Bakeries, Inc., d/b/a Bruegger's Fresh Bagel Bakery, alleging that it violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 when it suspended and subsequently terminated an employee due to her race. Although the information available for this summary was limited, it is known that the parties were able to reach an agreement in September 2001 that was all but finalized. The parties submitted a finalized consent decree and it was adopted by the court in November 2001. The decree awarded the complainant $30,000 and enjoined the defendant from discriminating and retaliating in the future. Further, the defendant was ordered to create training programs for its personnel regarding equal employment opportunity laws, create an anti-discrimination policy and implement it and post a notice of employee's rights at its facilities.
