The EEOC's Seattle district office sued Robert Larson's Chrysler Plymouth of Tacoma, Inc., d/b/a Larson Motors, Inc. and Robert Larson Automotive Group, on February 11, 2000 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington. The EEOC's complaint alleged that the defendant violated Title VII when it discriminated based on race (African American) by creating a racially hostile work environment and retaliating by demoting employees, resulting in their constructive discharge. The parties entered into a consent decree on January 24, 2001, which stipulated that the defendant would pay the complainants up to $750,000 in damages, post a notice of compliance with Title VII, provide Title VII training to its managers and employees, establish an internal complaint procedure, improve supervisor accountability, appoint a Payment Agent to handle distribution of funds from the settlement fund, appoint a Consent Decree Administrator to determine claimant eligibility for monetary awards, and appoint a Consent Decree/Complaint Monitor who will ensure that the defendant is complying with the consent decree and make recommendations for improvements to the defendant.
