Case Summary

In March 2001, the EEOC brought this action against the American Red Cross Blood Services, Greater Chesapeake and Potomac Region and Spherion Corporation, Inc. on behalf of women who alleged that the defendants had violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Equal Pay Act of 1963. Specifically, the EEOC alleged that the defendants had paid their female employees lower wages than their male counterparts for performing the same jobs. Filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, Northern Division. In October 2001, a consent decree was signed by the judge which enjoined the defendants from discriminating on the basis of sex and required them to post equal employment opportunity information in a conspicuous place in their offices. The defendants also agreed to compensate the female complainants in amounts commensurate with regular and overtime hours worked under discriminatory salary conditions.
