In September 2003, the EEOC district office in San Francisco, California brought this suit against the Stephens Institute, doing business as the Academy of Art, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. The amended complaint states that four named aggrieved Black employees alleged violations of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Specifically, the employees alleged that the defendant discriminated against them on the basis of their race. One individual claimed he was discharged because of his race. The parties agreed to attend ADR and settled the case upon its conclusion. A consent decree was entered in February 2005.In the consent decree, the parties agreed that the defendant would pay the complaining parties a total of $110,000, refrain from retaliating and discriminating on the basis of race, implement a complaint system, distribute EEO notices, and provide EEO training to all of its staff. The decree was entered in February 2005 and scheduled to last until February 2007. No further docket entries exist, so the case is closed.
