Case Summary

The Baltimore Field Office of the EEOC brought this suit against Special Counsel, Inc., a legal services company, in June 2004, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland. The case was resolved by a consent decree in December 2004, only six months after being filed. The suit was based on retaliation for complaints about age discrimination by the complainant, a female, in violation of the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA). The EEOC only asked for an injunction, back pay, and any other appropriate affirmative relief. The terms of the consent decree gave the complainant $69,000 in back pay along with a neutral reference. Special Counsel was required to expunge her record as well as refrain from retaliation in violation of the ADEA. In addition, they were required to institute two hour EEO training for managers and one hour EEO training for all other employees.
