The EEOC's Miami district office sued Jax Inns, Inc., on September 29, 2004 in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida. The EEOC's complaint alleged that the defendant violated Title VII when it discriminated based on race (African American) by harassing and terminating one of its employees for her association with African Americans. The parties entered into a consent decree on April 28, 2006, which stipulated that the defendant would pay the complainant $99,000 in damages, post a notice of compliance with Title VII, provide Title VII training to its managers and supervisors, distribute its non-discrimination policy, provide for a consent decree compliance official, and report complaints of discrimination or harassment to the EEOC semiannually.
The terms of the agreement were to run for 3 years. The docket sheet does not show any further enforcement took place; the case was presumably closed in 2009.
