The Detroit District Office of the EEOC brought this action in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, against The Salvation Army. The complaint, filed in July 2002, alleged religious and sexual discrimination in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, specifically that Defendant retaliated against one of the charging parties by discharging him for complaining about religious harassment based on his religion, Catholic, and retaliated against the other, female, charging parties by discharging them for complaining that they were subjected by sexual harassment.
In May 2003 the parties engaged in a settlement conference and the case settled. A consent decree was entered in June 2003, and amended to reflect further settlement in December 2003, which was valid for two years. The decree required Defendant to pay the charging parties a total of $52,842 (made up of damages and medical bills), provide Title VII training to its employees and post a notice of non-discrimination. Defendant was enjoined from discriminating and retaliating in violation of Title VII.
