Case Summary

In June 1998, the Detroit office of the EEOC brought this Title VII and ADEA suit against General Motors Corporation in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. The complaint alleged that the defendant failed to promote the charging party based on the charging party's race (black) and age (57). The defendant moved for summary judgment, which was granted in part and denied in part. The case settled by entry of a consent decree in April 2000.

The one year consent decree required the defendant to pay the charging party $140,000, refrain from discrimination and retaliation, provide the charging party with neutral references, provide one-on-one training for the supervisor who made the personnel decisions respecting promotions, and post notice of employees' rights regarding anti-discrimination under Title VII and the ADEA.
