In September 2005, the Cleveland office of the EEOC brought this Title VII suit against The Brown Publishing Company in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio. The complaint alleged that the defendant discriminated against the claimant, an African-American employee, by subjecting him to a racially hostile work environment, and terminating the claimant because of his race. The case settled by entry of a consent decree in October 2006.
The two year consent decree required the defendant to refrain from discrimination and retaliation, expunge the claimant's record, provide neutral references for the claimant, pay the claimant $24,750, post notice, continue to maintain its policy against discrimination and harassment, promote Management Accountability, provide Title VII training for all managers, supervisors, and employees, keep record of all complaints of incidents of race and/or retaliation discrimination, give the EEOC reports annually on these records, and allow the EEOC to have access to these records and documents. The docket sheet does not show any further enforcement; the case was presumably closed in 2008.
