In September 2005, the EEOC's Detroit office filed this suit in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan against Crowne Plaza Hotel alleging that it had created a hostile work environment for employees of Mexican national origin in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The EEOC cited examples of verbal abuse, detrimental changes in working conditions and work assignments, as well as discharge due to discrimination against those of Mexican national origin.
The parties retained a facilitative mediator in early 2006 and were able to submit a consent decree to the court, which was subsequently approved, in July 2006. The decree awarded $20,000 to one complainant and $9,000 to another complainant. It also ordered the defendant to pay $20,000 to a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that benefits immigrant rights. The decree also enjoined the defendant from discriminating or retaliating based on national origin as well as required the defendant to institute training programs and report employee complaints to the EEOC for a period of two years. The settlement term was 2 years. The docket sheet does not show any further enforcement; the case was presumably closed in 2008.
