The EEOC's Seattle office filed this suit on September 1, 2000 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington against Hanson Motors, d/b/a Hanson Volkswagen. The EEOC alleged that defendant subjected three female complainants to a sexually hostile work environment. The defendant answered and added a complaint of its own against the complainants, adding them as third-party defendants. The complainants subsequently filed their own complaints and intervened as plaintiffs.

The parties notified the court of settlement on September 21, 2001. A proposed consent decree was filed on October 16, 2001 and the court entered it October 22, 2001. The defendant agreed to pay a total of $670,000 to the complainants. The defendant also agreed to provide neutral references, expunge their employment records, and to refrain from conducting surveillance on them. Hanson also agreed to institute a complaint procedure and an anti-discrimination policy, and to appoint a consent decree monitor to oversee compliance.
